Time In A Pocket


     Now that winter is actually approaching Florida (it's sixty degrees out..BRRR!) and the palm trees might be threatened by frostbite, I pulled out the winter clothes from the attic. Inside the trunk I found an old, leather jacket from my early mommy days. As I tried it on (and noticed it was a bit snug at the waist), I slipped my hands into the pockets and discovered unidentified objects from years past. My fingers delved into the deep depths of the unknown for hidden treasure, and this is what I found:

* One lint coated breath mint

* A faded receipt from a Star Trek convention along with one rubber Spock ear

* Fossilized stick of gum from 2001

* A key to a piece-of-crap minivan I unloaded 10 years ago

* Wadded-up tissue that had disintegrated into a pile of white ash

* A used strand of floss from a steak house

* An unwrapped tampon that had swelled up to the size of an airline pillow

* A clump of moss

* An uncapped, hairy stick of lip balm

* A petrified granola bar

* Ticket stubs to an outdoor concert where the Hubs got smashed and stumbled into the ladies room

* A champagne cork and two sea shells from a night of celebrating on the beach when we...well, you know...

* An arm from a Batman action figure

* A scrap of paper with a phone number to a turtle taxidermy shop

* Two quarters, a Heineken beer bottle cap and a baby's pacifier (sounds like a party to me!)

* A Barbie doll head. No comment.

* A cocktail napkin from Al and Suzy's wedding...the party lasted
longer than the marriage

* A matchbook from a hotel in Orlando where the fire alarm went off at 3:00 a.m. and we were herded like cattle out into the parking lot.  I learned that people at that hour of the morning look like they belong in a circus act or an episode of Swamp People


     After much consideration,  I decided to leave the contents in the pockets---it was a time capsule of sorts. One day my kids will inherit the jacket and wonder about the contents. I like to keep them guessing.

    I've unearthed an old jacket a few times and usually find a tube of lip gloss and a kleenex. You found real treasure there! What I'm really super jealous about is the fact that you got to go to a Star Trek convention! :-D

    Darn, no bills. Every time I take out a new jacket I cross my fingers and pray for a $100 bill! I love that you're going to leave it all there, let those kids wonder!

    Okay... The phone number to a "Turtle Taxidermist???" I have to know more about this...

    I have to tell you though, My father was a hoarder, a real one. His house was filled from floor to ceiling with... Stuff. There were literally just narrow paths through the house betwixed the stuff. His coat rack ran the length of the hallway that led from the living room to the bed rooms. It was so full of jackets and coats you had to turn sideways to get down the hallway. There were probably 50 to 60 coats. Going through all the pockets was both fun and maddening. He liked to call himself "prepared", and every coat was stocked and ready to put on and go. Every single coat had in it's pockets, a note pad and pen, breath mints, lip balm, a lighter or matches, a package of tissues, water purification tablets, a pocket knife. And on top of all that each jacket had a selection of it's own contents depending on the purpose of the jacket. It really was kind of like some demented treasure hunt. We laughed, we cried, and at times we just said WTF... And that was just his coats.

    Thanks for the laugh. I needed that. I will not however be needing any pens, pencils, notepads, lighters, pocket knives, or water purification tablets for the rest of my life.

      OMG Jon, this is priceless! You have GOT to write a blog post about this!!! I can just see it now! I do have one question, though--after your father passed away, who had to clear out all his stuff?? That must have been...incredible. We really do need to explore this further....and BTW, do you have a pen I can borrow? LOL sorry--I couldn't resist!!!

    Had me cracking up as always! The last jacket I found (while moving) I found a nice stick of blue eye liner and pink glitter lip gloss... I didn't know whether to laugh or cry that I use to wear that. I wont however disclose how long ago those were popular colors to wear ;)

    Treasures in the pockets! :) Amazing what we keep in the pockets, isn't it? I try my best to remember to empty pockets before I put coats etc away. Remember I found 100RS (that's about $3,40) in a shirt pocket, just before the shirt went into the washing machine! And I was disappointed I didn't found more... :) I've been to FL years ago, but never thought that it gets that cold there... must be the Northern part though?

      I live in the very southern part but sometimes we get a bit of a cold snap. It actually snowed here once back in the 1970's...uh-oh I am really showing my age now....

    Those are some deep pockets you have in that jacket. I couldn't stop laughing ant more than half of the stuff you found in there. I love the idea of you saving that jacket as a time capsule of sorts.

    Each year add a wrapped gift to the pockets with a coy note, something else for the kids to open one day.

    You must have had some good times since you found so many objects attached to lovely memories too. Can you imagine the shock if you had given the jacket to someone who then found a bloated tampon inside? ha ha ha ha

    Wow! Who knew that much stuff could fit inside jacket pockets?

    I love that you will leave the jacket to your kids as a time capsule or memento. Just be sure to ditch the stuff that can mold, like that old mint. :)

    Oh that made me laugh out loud. I pulled an old purse out of the closet the other day and proceeded to let me six year old eat a piece of gum out of it. I was thinking, how bad could gum turn? By the look on his face, pretty bad. He ran to the trash can and spit it out. Good to know.....

    No wonder it was snug in the waist...those pockets were stuffed to the gills! By the way the thermometer reads 28 degrees here this morning with a windchill that make it feel like 15 degrees.     Oh my gosh! We are soul sistas! I literally just did this with my winter coat last night. It was SO cold here and, lo and behold, I found some cold, hard cash that amounted to 7 dollars! Yay, me! I have to say, though, that you found a lot more stuff than me! :)

    Hey it was kind of touchy to read this blog.. Time flies away v.fast. Isn't it?? And we are just left wid the memories.... which are worth cherishing.. :)
    Even I find my childhood stuff sometime in some corner of my house, and i can understand how it feels. They are realy priceless.

    I used to live in Florida! My father had a stroke in Sept. and my daughter and I had to search Miami for winter clothing so we could go and visit and not freeze in Texas!

      Oh my gosh I cannot even imagine how cold that must be! Last time I was in that kind of weather was 19 years ago on a winter trip to Montana. Brrrr!!!

    I was thinking your pockets sounded like the pockets of a five-year old boy and began to worry that you'd find a frog you stashed there years ago. Glad I was wrong.

    Love the time capsule. Especially the Spock ear, as I'm a bit of a Trekkie. Sounds like that jacket had a great life!

    Too funny! I always find stuff in my jacket pockets the following season. My big find was a $20 bill one year. Totally made my day! My son was once going through old backpacks to find one for himself (third child always gets hand-me-downs) and found quite a lovely surprise...a dead mouse! Needless to say, that backpack got thrown away!

    Are you seriously telling the truth? I mean, that is freaking CRAZY!!! I just love those items!! Those pockets must have been STUFFED!!! I love the idea of leaving for your kiddos the "treasures" and keep them guessing!!!
