Fly On The Wall Celebrating A Birthday And A Blogiversary

Welcome to another edition of Fly On The Wall group blog postings hosted by Karen of Baking In A Tornado. Today, three of us are welcoming you into our homes to see what a fly might see (or overhear).

Since we're still not traveling in the RV this summer (too blazing hot!!), the nosy fly has witnessed how we've kept busy with home improvement projects. Things are shaping up nicely around here--a desperately needed new metal roof and new fencing; a facelift for the tiki bar, new garden designs, a deck re-do and paint, paint, PAINT. We have been in our little 1950s cottage-style house for 39 years and will probably die here, haha.

Speaking of old things, Mac turned 69 a few weeks ago, and we celebrated in style. We're so fortunate to have our adult kids living nearby so that special holidays and birthdays can be celebrated with those we love most. Here's a photo dump of the old man's celebrations:

August 27th marks the 14-year blogiversary of Menopausal Mother. Check out my very first blog post, My Menopausal Moment for a good laugh! To give you an idea of how
long ago this was, I didn't even know how to use a computer when I wrote my first entry!!!

Blogging was the launch pad for my writing career, and my, what a journey it has been---from biweekly humor posts (when I only had 10 readers---now we are up to 60,000 page views per month!), to guest spots, podcasts, my first book publication, television interviews, menopause commercials, inclusion in 13 anthologies, multiple writing awards, an essay that went viral at the Huffington Post, (THAT was interesting--my first experience with trolls!!), and writing for top-notch publications such as the NY Times, The Washington Post, Yahoo Lifestyle, Cosmo, Woman's Day, McSweeney's, Good Housekeeeping, and now, a full-time writing career with AARP.

Sorry if I'm tooting my own horn, but dang it, I AM proud! And I want to make my family proud! I spent 15 years working as a professional home & office cleaner, plus I was an after-care babysitter for 5 kids and also catered dinners for several families---juggling all of these jobs simultaneously! Then I started up a baking business out of my home, which was fun but not very lucrative---and I gained 10 pounds doing it! Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would one day become a successful writer, let alone make a decent income from it! Chances are, I will NEVER retire because I love what I do, and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity God has given me to make my dreams a reality. Shout out to the people who got me started on this track by pushing me to write and gave me the confidence to do it, along with some much-needed advice---my folks, my sister, and of course, the funny man himself, Mac.

Soooo....Happy Blogiversary to me. If you're interested, here are links to some of my absolute favorite essays from the past:

Life is grand, and I hope I live a long time so I can continue sharing stories with wonderful readers like you! Thank you for the past 14 years!! #BeHumbleBeGrateful

***WANT MORE MENO MAMA? It has been a VERY busy work month! I wrote a fun piece for The Ethel about how this non-athlete gained her self-confidence through sports----you can read HERE and 3 new ones for The Girlfriend--summer crockpot dishes HERE then tips for your next high school reunion HERE  and an informative piece on how to earn money selling off old childhood items HERE . I also have 2 new essays up on AARP---one of which required 23 INTERVIEWS!! But I did it! What would you tell your younger self? Read all about it HERE And lastly, for AARP, why I enjoy the company of younger people, which you can read HERE

Hop on over to Karen and Diane's house to see what the nosy fly has been up to over there!

Fly On The Wall With An Expanding Family

Welcome to another edition of Fly On The Wall group blog postings hosted by Karen of Baking In A Tornado. Today there are three of us inviting you into our homes to see what a nosy fly might see if he was buzzing around our houses.

The fly is still sweltering over here in sunny south Florida and Lucy, our RV, is in resting mode while we wait out the hurricane season. Thankfully, summer is winding down, and pretty soon we'll start seeing fall decorations (pumkin spice, here I come!). But I can't complain---the past few months have been fun for us. We've been hanging out with friends, neighbors, and family whenever we can and making the most of our time together.

But the best news is WE ARE EXPANDING OUR FAMILY!! My son Jared and his wife Kay are expecting another baby in February, and we are overjoyed! This will be grandbaby #5 for us. We have 2 girls and 2 boys.....what will this one be? I say keep 'em coming----one can never have too many grandbabies!

It's hard to believe that next week marks 13 years of blogging for me. Meno Mama has come a long way since that first blog post (and I'm pretty much over my menopause journey), but I thought you might get a kick out of reading that original blog posted on August 27, 2011. Here's the link: http://www.menopausalmom.com/2011/08/first-menopausal-moment.html

I'm using photos from this beastly hot month to show you what the nosy fly watched us do while we were sweating and running up our A/C bill (plus eating way too much Heath Bar rum cake for Mac's 68th birthday celebration!):

Lastly, embrace this quote from the Dalai Lama because it is SO TRUE: "Just one small positive thought in the morning can change your whole day!"

***WANT MORE MENO MAMA? Check out my latest column for Yahoo Life on seniors and loneliness HERE Over at AARP/Experience Counts, read my latest article on exotic pet ownership HERE And then on AARP/The Girlfriend I have 2 foodie articles up---one on easy make-ahead meals that you can read HERE and another on what do make with leftover chicken HERE.

That's a wrap! Now go see what the fly has been up to at these houses:

Fly On The Wall Where The Superflies Roam

Welcome to another edition of Fly On The Wall group blog postings hosted by Karen of Baking In A Tornado. Today there are three of us inviting you into our homes to see what a nosy fly might see if he was buzzing around.

The flies around here are enjoying our company even though we are sweltering in this Florida heat. I was tempted to hand out fly swatters at our neighborhood 4th of July party because those buggers were relentless when the BBQ was brought to the table.

We're still camping every few weeks despite this interminable heat, but the problem is that the flies also love camping---especially near the RV sewer drains (gross, I know). They've been following us everywhere even though we go through the numerous cans of bug spray we pack. I think they must be a new breed of superfly that's immune to poison. It's bad enough we have to worry about bears on our camping trips, but FLIES?? I need one of those electric zapper things to hang from the RV. And the mosquitoes? Don't even get me started.....

Here are some snippets of conversation the superflies overheard while we were sweating and swatting at them:

"Why are there SO MANY FLIES inside the RV?"
"It's the outdoor drain---the poop tube---that attracts them."
"But most of them are circling around YOU. When was the last time you showered?"
"I don't remember, but I did flush out the poop tube today."
"Oh my God, it's you! Flies know stink when they smell it. Go take a damn shower!"

"I like this battery-operated wrinkle diminisher you bought. If I use it every day, I should see results over time. "
"Uhhhh....with your amount of wrinkles, it's going to run out of batteries long before you see any results."

"Look at all these birds! So many different types---but I don't know what the difference is between a finch and a sparrow."
"The spelling...."

"Your phone doesn't get good internet when we're in the woods, and my phone doesn't take good pictures. Our cells need to link up and make a baby so we can get the perfect phone that takes good pictures AND has good internet."
"That's not going to happen because my phone has a low sex drive and yours has ED."

"I really want to get that tattoo we discussed---Be Humble, Be Grateful."

"As much eating as we've been doing lately on these camping trips, you need to change that saying to Be Humble, Be Fatful."

"Fast food chicken nuggets are so gross. You never know exactly what's in them. There could be human parts in there, for all we know!"
"Remind me the next time I pull up to the takeout window at McDonalds to ask for their 6-piece cadaver nuggets."

"You know how I know I'm getting older?"
"Ummmm....do you have 30 minutes?"
"No---but when I was younger, I carried condoms in my wallet. Now I carry bandaids instead."

"Why won't you ride the mechanical bull?"
"Because you know what happened the last time I tried. I fell off and wrenched my shoulder."
"But it was so funny! Come on, try again!"
"No way. With my luck, I'll fall this time and permanently injure my back."
"Your point?"
"My point is that I'm not going to hurt myself just for your amusement."
"But you promised you'd make me laugh at least once every single day we were married."
"Remind me---what's the name of that divorce lawyer you said you're friends with on Facebook?"

I don't see any mechanical bulls or campground showers in my husband's future, but I'm working on getting him that FATFUL tattoo for his arm....

Fly On The Wall In The Blistering Month Of July

Welcome to another edition of Fly On The Wall, hosted by Karen of Baking In A Tornado. Today, the two of us are inviting you into our homes to give you a fly's eye view of what goes on behind closed doors.

Another amazing 4th of July celebration is in the books! Lots of food, fireworks, and fun with everyone!

The fly at our house prefers to stay indoors not only to overhear our conversations but to relax in the A/C since it's hotter than Hades outside. Can't say that I blame him---every time I sit in the backyard garden I have to surround myself with double fans and chug an ice-cold beverage. Even the hot tub is no longer hot---we have it set at a refreshing 80 degrees so that we can pretend we own a pool. But the nosy fly still follows us around, and here's a peek at what he overheard this blistering month of July:

I recently suffered from a bout of Perioral Dermatitis, which is an unsightly red rash that starts on the nostrils and spreads down all around the mouth to the chin. It's an itchy, stubborn rash that is caused by an allergic reaction to lotions, toothpaste, and certain medications. In my case, it was a new facial serum I'd been using that triggered the ugly rash. My husband accompanied me to the dermatologist, and when she asked why I was there, I said, "LOOK AT ME! I look like a lioness who was just finished feasting on the bloody carcass of an antelope!!" My husband thought my remark was hilarious, but the dermatologist....not so much.

Speaking of uncomfortable ailments, Hubs is dealing with an annoying case of Plantar fasciitis. He is on his feet all day walking several miles at work, but now it hurts to put pressure on the heel and the arch of his foot. He has to wear a support pad in his shoe during the day and a special boot at night to keep his foot straight while he sleeps. It has been bothering him for several weeks now and after listening to his numerous complaints while hobbling around the house, I jokingly tell him to just cut the damn foot off. The other night when we were in bed, my husband was struggling to get the bulky plastic boot over his foot while I was reading about weight loss stories associated with Ozempic. Our conversation went something like this:

"Man, I wish I could have a prescription for Ozempic."
"And I wish I could have an artificial foot."
"Either way, we'd lose a few pounds---I'd lose the weight of my gut and you'd lose the weight of a foot."
"Always looking for the positives, arent you?"

And of course, the fly was privy to other weird conversations that always involved my husband.

"Hey, look at all the mail that came for you today."
"Yeah, it's depressing.....because now I REALLY know how old I am since I'm getting mail for discounted burial sites and offers for affordable cremations."

"Do you think it's hot in this house?"
"No, but I think it's hot in your pants...."
"Wait, what?"

"Why are you slurring your words? Did you drink?"
"No, but I have so much food in my stomach that my mouth doesn't work."

"I'm going to fart on your pillow to give you pink eye."
"No, in that case, it would be called stink eye."

"I'm not aging like a fine wine; I'm aging like a banana."
"How so?"
"I have brown spots all over my skin and a soft middle section."

My GORGEOUS Grandbabes! They are my LIFE!!!

This episode of Fly On The Wall was brought to you by a writer who is very grateful that her job is an indoor one with a thermostat set to 74 degrees. Meanwhile, her husband is outside in the scorching 95+ degrees pulling weeds from a hot garden that's melting like a Salvadori Dali painting. Maybe I can talk the fly into braving the heat to deliver an ice-cold beverage to my husband. He might even learn some new curse words from Hubs, too.

***Want More Meno Mama? I'm thrilled to share one of my first food articles in THE GIRLFRIEND (you can read it HERE) ---a website I have been trying to get published in for several years. But stay tuned--there are quite a few more articles coming from me on the site! Also, I have a new foodie article on AARP/The Ethel about camp food which you can read  HERE, and one on light summer food recipes HERE

After you finish buzzing around here with the fly, be sure and stop by Karen's house to see what her fly overheard this month!
