Your Smile, Your Love: 4 Common Points

As most of you know, I'm all about humor and providing plenty of smiles. What you might not know about me though, is that I once worked as a dental assistant many years ago, and I know the importance of being able to smile without worrying about how your teeth look.

Please welcome my guest, Dr. Bach, on the site today who is here to stress the importance of good dental health, which is critical to maintaining your pearly whites!

Your Smile, Your Love – 4 Common Points

When we’re happy, we smile – it’s just a fact. Whether we’re spending time with friends and family, listening to our favorite song, watching the latest episode of the latest binge-worthy show, or savoring a slice of the best cheesecake in the world, doing something you love just puts a smile on your face. Don’t think it’s true? Here are four common points between smiling and love that are sure to get you grinning.
Both Are Contagious
Let’s face it – if you’re around smiling people all day, you’re liable to start smiling yourself. Good moods have always been contagious, as it’s hard to maintain even the most long-brewing pout when everywhere you go there’s just happiness everywhere.
Love is often the same. When it’s expansive and mutual, whether it’s between long-married spouses, treasured children and grandchildren, or lifelong friends, enduring love just tends to be contagious. That’s one thing nobody should mind catching!
Both Are Natural Painkillers
This isn’t a case of tough love or smiling through the pain – both smiling and experiencing pain have been clinically proven to provide pain relief. This might sound like some of the mind control malarkey you might have run across in the 1970s, but it’s not magic – it’s just brain chemistry.
It doesn’t matter if you’re head over heels in love with your spouse, filled with joy at the sight of a grandchild, or if you’re watching your favorite movie and you’ve been smiling and laughing nonstop for two hours straight, these actions trigger the release of neurotransmitters in your brain. Known as endorphins (and having a reputation as nature’s pain killers), these brain chemicals heighten and intensify positive moods, making them feel pleasurable – and often wipe out any aches and pains you might be feeling at the same time. Isn’t science wonderful?
Both Make You Look – and Feel – Younger
No one will ever deny that experiencing and feeling love can make you feel young at heart. There’s research to back this up, as married couples in deep, committed relationships tend to live longer – and have happier lives – than those who are perpetually single. Of course, if you’re not married to someone you love, it might be time to change; you don’t want to be miserable the rest of your life, do you?
Meanwhile, scientists say smiling can also lead to longevity benefits. Forget any stress caused by laugh lines for now – smiling and laughing regularly induce physiological changes in your body that help to reduce stress, making you feel healthier. Plus, a genuine smile can take years off your face, but the opposite is also true. Just as spending your time with people who don’t love you brings you down, going for hours or days without smiling robs you of its physical benefits.
Both Need to Be Taken Care of
Love is great, love is grand, but love doesn’t manage itself. Maintaining healthy relationships with your closest loved ones may not require extreme micromanagement, but you do need to work at it by spending quality time with the people in your life that lift your spirits when you’re around them. Otherwise, relationships have a tendency to dry up and disappear – like a potted plant you forgot to water.
Your smile is much the same – your pearly whites won’t brush themselves. Dental health is pretty important, especially since it’s hard to grin and bear it when you feel self-conscious about the state of your smile. Just like you need to check in regularly with your friends and family members to build love, you’ve got to check in with your dentist often to maintain your smile. Sizzling Summer Guest Post By: Gina Valley

I'm thrilled to feature today's guest writer on the blog! Yes, she is another humorist I met two years ago at my first Erma Bombeck Writers Workshop convention in Dayton, and we met up again this past April for the 2016 conference. Gina Valley writes hilarious posts on her blog, ginavalley.com The Glamorous Life Of The Modern Day Soccer Mom. We sat together during many of the classes and meals at EBWW and I had to control myself from laughing too loudly at some of her remarks. I love her quick wit and her ability to take an ordinary situation and turn into an entertaining story. The post she is sharing here is a great example of this.

If you're looking for a good belly laugh, be sure and stop by her site. In the meantime, please welcome Gina to Meno Mama's site today with lots of comment love. Enjoy!

Did He Use MY Toothbrush?!?!

He couldn’t have. He didn’t. He did!

I’m sure this is a violation of the whole “sickness and health” clause, although I’m not exactly sure how yet.

He used my toothbrush!

How disgusting is that?

And, it didn't even seem to bother him. He actually seemed to think it was funny.

It was not funny.

There is nothing funny about someone else using your toothbrush.

Especially, when it's my toothbrush.

I know what some people think. We've made babies together. Clearly, this is not the first “mixing of our essences.” That's true. Not even the first time today.

And, I have to admit my tongue has touched his teeth before. Yet, somehow, the idea of using my toothbrush as a go between from my mouth to his is totally unacceptable.

He chuckled as he told me that, after he'd finished brushing his teeth, he realized he'd grabbed and used the wrong toothbrush. Mine, inadvertently, instead of his.

I say there are no accidents.

Besides, my toothbrush is pink and his is dark blue. How do you mix those up? I wonder what Dr. Phil would say about that? “It’s like nailing Jell-O to the wall!”

I didn't want to hurt his feelings by totally freaking out, much as my OCD was screaming at me to do just that.  I couldn’t very well start scrubbing my toothbrush with bleach without insulting him. So, I decided I'd "accidentally" knock my toothbrush into the toilet, thereby making its replacement both mandatory and blameless.

While I smoothed moisturizer onto my skin with my left hand, I used my pinky and ring finger of my right hand to slowly inch the contaminated oral cleaning rod toward the toilet.

Just touching it gave me the heebie jeebies. How could I touch something dripping with someone else's saliva?

My tooth brush was an agent of filth.

My toothbrush was a speed rail for germs.

My toothbrush was bone dry.

How was it possible for my toothbrush to be quite without humidity when he had used it just minutes before?

My eyes darted around the bathroom, searching for an answer, and fell on his dark blue toothbrush, lying on the counter, next to his toothbrush holder (he never stands it up in its holder. Drives me crazy).

Had he used his own toothbrush, but thought it was mine? Could someone really mix up pink-in-a-holder with blue-on-the-counter? Was it time to start looking for "The Home"?

At the risk of barfing a little, I decided to check his toothbrush for signs of recent usage. His, too, was bone dry.
Was this a miracle? Had toothbrush angels descended from heaven and dispelled the disgusting act?!?!

I stared at our bathroom counter, realizing that even the toothbrush angels couldn’t reverse this travesty of personal hygiene. I might have thrown up a little in my mouth, just thinking about what had happened.

Yes, he had used my toothbrush.

But, not my pink one from my toothbrush holder.  He'd used the dark green one I keep on the counter next to the sink.

The one I use to clean the gunk out from underneath my fingernails!!!

Maybe there is something funny about someone else using your toothbrush, after all.

The 10 Commandments of Middle Age

There are certain do's and don'ts to aging, but some people are clueless when it comes to acting appropriately for their age. I'm not suggesting that you should throw in the towel after fifty and let yourself age like a hag. I'm just giving you some pointers on what you can and cannot get away with once you're considered over the hill. If you want to dye your hair chartreuse and tattoo your cat's name on your shoulder, that's up to you. Otherwise, here's some simple advice to follow whenever you forget that your name is already on the AARP mailing list.

1.)  Thou shalt wear clothing styles that flatter thy age. This means you should steer clear of the clothing you wore when you were twenty-something and thirty pounds lighter. Ladies, just because you rocked that mini skirt back in 1970 doesn't mean you have the legs to pull it off at age fifty. If the backs of your thighs look like the surface of a golf ball, ditch the short skirt and find a sexy one that sits just above the knees. Men, hopefully you're not trying to squeeze into the red speedos your wore at the beach during spring break forty years ago. You are not competing on the Olympic swim team and no one wants to see your shrunken roly poly trapped in wet nylon.

2.) Thou shalt carry dental floss with thee at all times.  As you get older, your gums recede and leave perfect little pockets around the teeth for food storage. Unless you plan on eating those trapped  morsels later in the day, or if you enjoy digging spinach out of your teeth in a restaurant, keep a roll of floss handy for food trap emergencies. Your mouth should not be a storage bin for leftovers.

3.) Thou shalt not drink more than one libation a day. Your memory cells are already down to single digits from aging. Why kill off the precious few you have left with shots of tequila?

4.) Thou shalt moisturize thy skin on a regular basis.  Things begin happening to the collagen in your skin as you age. Bad things. Unless you want your face to droop like the man in Edvard Munch's painting "The Scream", start applying creams as heavy as wall spackle to your skin to avoid a massive collagen meltdown.

5.) Thou shalt eat an entire bag of carrots a day. By the time you hit your fifties, your eye site will be no better than a mole's. Carrots have vitamin A in them, which is good for your eyes. Seriously, have you ever seen a rabbit wearing glasses?

6.) Thou shalt not pass gas in public places.  Old people and farts are synonymous. Don't be like old people. Practice your sphincter Kegels daily to avoid mishaps on a crowded elevator or in the line at the grocery store when there's a sale on Metamucil.

7.) Thou shalt take no less than 20 supplements a day to stay healthy.  By the time your youngest child is in college, you should own a large pill box with compartments that are clearly marked with the days of the week. You should also be on a first name basis with your pharmacist.

8.) Thou shalt not gain 10 pounds a year after the age of 50.  Hide the butter, hide the cream. Eat too much, you'll bust a seam.

9.)  Thou shalt maintain a healthy, intimate relationship with thy partner.  Keep in mind that you're not a frisky twenty-one year old any more. If you think being adventurous in the bedroom means trying out the Kama Sutra "Splitting Bamboo" position, think again. You just might pull a hamstring and end up in a leg brace.

10.) Thou shalt maintain thy sense of humor.  That old saying that "laughter is the best medicine" is true. Everyone needs to find their happy place in order to smile. If that means finding it in the bottom of a jar of Nutella or watching your spouse wrangle out of a chair that the grandkids have duct taped him to while babysitting, then so be it.

See? Getting older isn't so bad. You can get away with things like forgetting to shave your legs or eating dessert before dinner. And if you're really lucky, no one will notice that glob of spinach between your teeth.

You Might Be Considered Over The Hill If…..

Several of my friends recently celebrated their fortieth birthdays, and each of them bemoaned the fact that they would now be considered "Over The Hill." I bit my lip to keep from laughing because they have NO CLUE what life (and gravity!) has in store for them 10-20 years AFTER turning 40..

For anyone who has just hit the "big 4-0", here's a little glimpse into what your fifties and sixties will be like:

* You worry about the amount of candles on your birthday cake and keep a fire extinguisher close by, just in case.

* The vitamin store down the street has become your one-stop-shop, and you find yourself wishing they had a 24 hour drive-thru when you're constipated and in need of some heavy duty fiber pills at 1:00 a.m.

* You pop Tums like candy after every meal and keep an extra bottle on your nightstand.

* If you're a woman, you start tucking your boobs into your waistband. If you're a man, you worry that you might trip over your testicles if they drop any closer to your ankles.

* You recognize all the songs on the easy listening radio station and sing along with each one.

* Despite hating it as a kid, prune juice tastes pretty good now.

* You consider yourself lucky if you remember where you left your car in the Target parking lot.

* It takes a moment to straighten up your spine once you push yourself off the couch.

* You pay special attention to infomercials advertising the "Girth Girdle", "Pound Around Pantyhose" and the "Belly Buster."

* You're squinting at road signs and switching all of your 40 watt light bulbs for 60's, especially the ones above the bathroom mirror.

* You drag the heating pad out of the linen closet more than once a week.

* Your pills and supplements no longer fit in an ordinary pill box, so you're forced to use a large shoe box instead.

* You own more than one pair of Spanx.

* Your refrigerator is stocked with probiotic yogurt to regulate your digestive system and to prevent a bowel blow-out in public.

* You hate to miss an episode of Dr. Oz and plan your schedule around his daily show.

* Your days of sunbathing are long gone but the leopard spots on your face, arms and legs are a constant reminder of all the times you forgot to wear sunscreen.

* Your butt is beginning to droop like two wet sandbags.

* While at work, you long for your kindergarten days when napping after lunch was encouraged.

* You spend a small fortune on teeth whitening strips to counteract your increased consumption of coffee and red wine.

* You're either sweating or freezing all the time. The weather is no longer your friend, and neither is the thermostat.

No need to worry, my forty-something friends. Pour yourself another prune juice cocktail and embrace your inner leopard!

Fly On The Wall In The New Year

It's that time again! For those of you new to my blog, once a month I participate in these "Fly On the Wall" group postings with 13 other bloggers. It's a chance to see what REALLY goes on behind the closed doors of all my writer friends. It's also an opportunity for me to share with you the nutty things and the odd conversations that go on in my own home.

This month the pesky fly witnessed some interesting things. I broke my big toe, for starters. Yeah, remember Queen of Klutz? I'm living up to that title in 2015.

The fly was also buzzing around a few weeks ago when I was a nervous wreck at the NBC studios. Shortly before I was to go on the set for a live interview about my Spandex book, my husband said something so off-the-wall stupid that it was hilarious…..just as I took a GINORMOUS swig from my water bottle. Needless to say, water spewed EVERYWHERE, soaking my shirt and the white fabric couch I was sitting on.  That's not even the worst of it. Moments before the camera turned to me, I looked down and noticed a large hole in my black leggings, just below the knee. Note to self: next time I'm invited to a television station, I'm bringing a bib and an emergency sewing kit.

If you were a nosy fly on the wall at my house this month, these are some snippets of conversation you would have overheard in the looney bin that I call home:

"You're a true carnivore. Every day you open the meat drawer in the refrigerator and gorge on cold  lunch meat right out of the packet. No bread or condiments necessary."

"Am I the only one who has a husband who offers shots of whiskey to the cable guy after the installation is finished?"

"Never come between a little girl and her ice cream cone."

"You sure do go the bathroom a lot before leaving for work every morning."
"I'm worried that I'll need to poop while I'm out on a landscaping job."
"You could always use the bushes and grab some leaves for toilet paper."
"With my luck, the leaves would be covered in poisonous sap and gum up my butt."

"Since when did a simple toy like a child's spinning top become a dance party with strobe lights and techno music?"

"I ate so much, I'm having Braxton Hicks from my food baby."

"Hey honey, wanna go to the gun show this weekend?"
"I'd rather have my teeth extracted."

      "My stomach hurts."
     "Eat a cheese stick."
"Your answer to everything is a cheese stick! Got diarrhea? Eat a cheese stick. Dementia? Eat a cheese stick. Financial problems? Eat a cheese stick!"

"You know you're old when you keep several pairs of toenail clippers in your nightstand drawer."

"These book signings always make me nervous. I'm afraid no one will buy my book."
"If you ply them with enough wine and beer, they'll buy the Brooklyn Bridge from you."

"You girls think 50 Shades of Gray is cool---well, your mother and I are on 60 Shades of Gray….and that doesn't include our hair color."

"Why does my home office smell like a baby's dirty diaper? We don't even have a baby."
"This is where all the kids slept when they were infants. It's the ghosts of old poops that you're smelling."

"I would NEVER eat anything called, 'Crunchy Tuna Surprise'."
"Yeah, because the surprise part is that you don't know what the crunchy stuff is."

"Just when you think you're doing a good job parenting your teen, he tells you that he and his buddies spent the evening Tasering one another for fun."

"The family that wrestles together, stays together."
