IRISH TWINS MOM'S LUNCH WITH THE PICKY EATER

Tales From The Princess

“No, I don’t want it like this!”

This was Lily at lunch today crying, because I apparently didn’t make her brown bread (pumpernickel bread) with sugar butter (whipped butter with cinnamon) and peanut butter sandwich the way Nannie makes for her.

She stood there crying with her little hands in the air to tell me the sugar butter and peanut butter needed to up.

I actually had to ask my mom what she was talking about.  Apparently, my mom puts it on for her so that it isn’t spread, but in clumps, because Lily likes to actually see the two on the bread.

Not going to lie though as Lily was trying her best to explain, she was crying tears of frustration. And I was laughing so hard, I was crying at the absurdity of it all.

Yes, Lily the picky eater strikes again!  Probably sounds awful to the outside party reading this, especially if you don't have kids or not a mother.

Doing her thing
  Lily In A Quieter Moment

But here is the thing, no matter what time of day it is here at my home, we have crazy moments that will make us laugh, cry, scream or even want to pull your hair right out of your head.  As crazy as it sounds, I have gotten attune to moments like the above being the mom to two small girls, who are only 16 months apart.

My Irish Twins Having Their Own Fun in The Back of Dad's Just Washed Jeep in Our Driveway

Many say being the mom of twins is insane.  I am not denying that it is or taking anything away from twin moms, but will admit having what they call Irish twins (my mother-in-law coined this term even before I had kids having had her own set of Irish twins with my husband being the younger of the two) has been anything short of the lunacy and yet I don't think I would have it any other way now.

It is what it is and not only do I deep down live for being the mom of Irish Twins, I embrace it daily.  Times like I described above are the norm for me, define me and even go as far as making me feel like I am a part of an unwritten special club with all the other Irish Twin moms.

Irish Twins Mom's Tales

By the way, someone told me a while back when I referred to my girls as Irish Twins that my girls aren't true Irish twins, because Irish Twins are really those born in the same calendar year (being 12 months apart), but I know only one other person that had her kids exactly 12 months apart in real life and not sure that many others (possibly Tori Spelling) have had kids 12 months or less apart.
Seriously, if you have then you deserve a medal or at least a little hug! (Sorry couldn't help, but quote Russel Brand from his Saving Sara Marshall role).

Irish Twins mom or not, I would settle for a little hug daily for all the craziness I do endure even at lunchtime.  But still want to thank Menopausal Mother for allowing me to share my Wacky World with you today.

  1. Hurrah for hosting Janine. I love her blog!! I think her little ones look so much alike they are probably mistaken for bona fide twins sometimes. Little cutie pies. :)

My 6-yr old takes the cheese off of his pizza...won't eat it. Cracks us up every time he eats it (and he LOVES his pizza, hahaha, which makes it even funnier). :)

    1. Rosey, love seeing you here today and will tell you that my picky eater actually does love pizza, but only really Ellios (seriously I have to keep boxes of it in the freezer for her!).

  2. That is close having children... my mom had me on July 23 in 1963 and then on July 12 1964 my mom had my sister... yes, crazy... I don't know how she did it... I waited 22 years to have my second one, not sure I could have survived both of them at the same time and they are good girls :)

    1. Launna, my mom waited 6 years in between me (I am the older child) and my kid brother. She, too, said she would not have been able to deal with us being that close in age. I will say I am blessed with help from both my mom and my mother-in-law, too. But still, I was definitely a bit shell shocked at first. Definitely gets easier though as they get older and can entertain themselves :)

  4. My boys are only 12 months apart! So I guess that means I have Irish triplets :P It is certainly rough sometimes, I know how you feel. Except of course mine are still really little. I hope it gets easier and not harder as they get older! Also, your girls are adorable :)

    1. Thank you Stephanie and I honestly give you props and not sure what I would have done adding a third to the mix so quickly, but we do have a puppy now and definitely giving me a bit of a run for my money :)

  6. Oh, I have been there! My little Emmy, who is about to turn 7, still has meltdowns over things like peanut butter sandwiches! Yesterday it was because I didn't have big enough paper for her to draw on. I'm still wondering when she will grow out of having tantrums!

    1. I seriously will not miss tantrums, but then again my 37 year old husband still has them sometimes. So, not sure when they will get outgrown here, lol!! :)

  7. Hug to you indeed! I can't imagine having kids less than 3 years apart, LOL :). Kids, why are they so specific?!?!?! That sandwich sounds awesome though.

    1. Lisa, I thought it was a pretty good sandwich, but still we had a bit of a meltdown. Trust me not a plan here, but have gotten used it :)

  8. Girl! You rock! I don't know how you do it. When I have my nephew over that is 3 weeks younger than my 2 year old, I go from 0 to frustrated in about 10 minutes! Bravo to you!

  9. Thanks Echo and trust me I have my moments here, too!

  10. My sister in law has Irish twins and those boys keep her on her toes! They are so cute though! We've had plenty of meltdowns here too and my kids are all around 2 years apart, so it's a little easier, but it still seems pretty crazy at times!

    1. Michelle, I think anything 2 years apart or younger is definitely craziness, but I do feel like for the most part it has gotten easier as they are getting older (ate least so far).

  11. My older two are 15 months apart and then I waited 6 years for the third. :) Learned my lesson the first time. hehe no I don't mean that. I wouldn't have it any other way.

  12. Becka, I truly know the feeling and believe me when I say now I too wouldn't have had it any other way!! :)

  15. It's hard convincing your family you're a picky eater when you're a little chubby chatterbox growing up. My parents weren't concerned if I skipped a meal ever now and then because I didn't like what was being served, or how it was served.

    1. Stephen, I was a picky eater, but I was a skinny nothing, so my parents were on the flip side constantly with trying to get me to eat.

  16. They are just so cute Janine! They do look a lot like twins! And I can imagine them growing up as best friends!

  17. Yes, true Irish Twins are born in the same calendar year, and I know a few who have managed to do that, but I completely agree, you qualify and not to take anything away from twin moms, I do think babies spaced 18 months and younger apart is beyond difficult. Your girls are lovely!!!

  18. Fun to read about your Irish Twins!!
Fun fact - I have a twin brother and then my younger brother and sister are 13 months apart. Like you said, my mom said that having little ones 13 months apart was harder than twins!!!

    1. Kim, I am not sure I knew you were a twin and seriously not sure why I didn't know this, but I think your mom sounds amazing for having twins and then going back for more, too. God bless her :)

  19. I so hear you with the laughing during a freak out. If I don't laugh, I will cry or yell...it's a joy to know that we all have those moments, we are not alone. Poor Lily trying to explain, but she can't...I feel for Dino in those moments.

    1. Karen, I swear if I didn't laugh like I said I truly would cry. So, in the end better to laugh and smile, I think, but yes I do feel so bad when they can't get their point exactly across to us.

  21. Brown bread with sugar butter (did I get that right?) sounds amazing, actually.
I remember my mom doing it well and my friend's mom making dreadful cinnamon toast. Just dreadful.
I love stories about your girls!

    1. Thanks Tamara and you totally got it right. The brown bread is pumpernickel bread and the cinnamon butter is actually Land O'Lakes Butter with cinnamon whipped into it. I am no gourmet, so trust me store bought here :)

  24. I think Irish twins are actually born in the same year. If you think about it, it makes sense because twins are born on the same day in the same year. I had a boss who had a sister and they were 11 months apart!!! Yes! I know. :) Your girls are still close in age and I think the term suits the situation anyway. I love that Lily! She makes me smile. I have a brother who is 12 months and 13 days younger than me and most people thought we were twins growing up. :) Great post, Janine!

    1. Thanks Brittnei and they are indeed born in one calendar year, but like I said most think my girls are twins, because still so close in age and similar in build. So, I have kindly added us to this term and we are honorary members :)

  25. I think I actually told Janine before that I first thought Emma and Lily are twins because they really do look alike. Janine, love what you said that those moments in your home have been part of your norms and that you actually just embrace them. I should do more of that too! And I can relate with you because I also have a very picky kid! :)

    1. Rea, I totally do remember you telling me you thought they were twins. Most do and my husband keeps telling me I should just tell strangers they are, instead of explaining and just call it a day, but to be honest I am proud that they aren't and feel like I have to share. And sorry you too have a picky eater on your hands! ;)

  26. You deserve a medal! But I also know how much you love your girls. I could just see Lily with her hands in the air trying to get her message across. Hope she had the sandwich after all! Love....xxxxoooo

  27. My daughter's always been picky about her food. She's 20 now, but no different; finding something she'll eat when she comes around is a nightmare.
