Fly On The Wall In Love

Welcome to another edition of Fly On The Wall group blog postings hosted by Karen of Baking In A Tornado. Today, there are three of us bloggers inviting you into our homes to see what a fly might see (or overhear).

The fly has been very happy during this month of love at our home. We had a sweet, romantic Valentine's Day dinner out, and as fun as it was, that wasn't the BEST part of the celebration.....because I have news..... I'M A GRANDMOTHER AGAIN!!! Grandbaby number #5 was born 2 weeks ago to my oldest son and daughter-in-law. Sweet Rory is the cutest little girl, rounding out the family now with 2 grandsons and 3 granddaughters between my oldest daughter's family and my oldest son's family. We are in love!

Another reason for the feelings of deep gratitude and love is due to a little health scare I faced (but I'm fine now, I promise!) and then a nasty tumor that showed up 2 months ago on my precious pug. You may recall that I lost 2 other pugs to cancer (which was emotionally devastating) but this time I educated myself on the best protocol (first surgery, then oncology appointments, and then a 100% switch to holistic treatments as well as my organic, home-cooked meals and supplements) and our fur baby is now cancer free... and THRIVING! Hopefully he will be wth us for many more years. I have made it my mission to help other pet parents now who are dealing with MCTs, so if you need treatment advice and resources, hit me up!

As usual, we like to fill our weekends with lots of family time and hanging with our friends---it's nice to have something to look forward to on a regular basis. Of course, the RV season has begun for us again so each month we will be parking Lucy at a new site. In fact, by the time you read this, we will be donning our traditional  "camp muumuus" and enjoying a game of cards by the firepit at Koreshan State Park on Florida's west coast. I live for these mini vacations!!

The only downside to this month was the Chiefs losing their 3-peat chance at the Super Bowl when they were slaughtered by the Eagles. OUCH. But many of my friends are Eagles fans, so I can't be too mad....right?

So while the fly is still buzzing around my box of Valentine's chocolates (shoo fly, SHOO!), I'll end my post with some of this month's photos.

Hope y'all had a great "lover's holiday" and I'll see you next month with my nosy, winged companion (and no, I'm not talking about Mac). As always, be humble, be grateful!

Fly On The Wall With An Expanding Family

Welcome to another edition of Fly On The Wall group blog postings hosted by Karen of Baking In A Tornado. Today there are three of us inviting you into our homes to see what a nosy fly might see if he was buzzing around our houses.

The fly is still sweltering over here in sunny south Florida and Lucy, our RV, is in resting mode while we wait out the hurricane season. Thankfully, summer is winding down, and pretty soon we'll start seeing fall decorations (pumkin spice, here I come!). But I can't complain---the past few months have been fun for us. We've been hanging out with friends, neighbors, and family whenever we can and making the most of our time together.

But the best news is WE ARE EXPANDING OUR FAMILY!! My son Jared and his wife Kay are expecting another baby in February, and we are overjoyed! This will be grandbaby #5 for us. We have 2 girls and 2 boys.....what will this one be? I say keep 'em coming----one can never have too many grandbabies!

It's hard to believe that next week marks 13 years of blogging for me. Meno Mama has come a long way since that first blog post (and I'm pretty much over my menopause journey), but I thought you might get a kick out of reading that original blog posted on August 27, 2011. Here's the link: http://www.menopausalmom.com/2011/08/first-menopausal-moment.html

I'm using photos from this beastly hot month to show you what the nosy fly watched us do while we were sweating and running up our A/C bill (plus eating way too much Heath Bar rum cake for Mac's 68th birthday celebration!):

Lastly, embrace this quote from the Dalai Lama because it is SO TRUE: "Just one small positive thought in the morning can change your whole day!"

That's a wrap! Now go see what the fly has been up to at these houses:

Fly On The Wall Where The Superflies Roam

Welcome to another edition of Fly On The Wall group blog postings hosted by Karen of Baking In A Tornado. Today there are three of us inviting you into our homes to see what a nosy fly might see if he was buzzing around.

The flies around here are enjoying our company even though we are sweltering in this Florida heat. I was tempted to hand out fly swatters at our neighborhood 4th of July party because those buggers were relentless when the BBQ was brought to the table.

We're still camping every few weeks despite this interminable heat, but the problem is that the flies also love camping---especially near the RV sewer drains (gross, I know). They've been following us everywhere even though we go through the numerous cans of bug spray we pack. I think they must be a new breed of superfly that's immune to poison. It's bad enough we have to worry about bears on our camping trips, but FLIES?? I need one of those electric zapper things to hang from the RV. And the mosquitoes? Don't even get me started.....

Here are some snippets of conversation the superflies overheard while we were sweating and swatting at them:

"Why are there SO MANY FLIES inside the RV?"
"It's the outdoor drain---the poop tube---that attracts them."
"But most of them are circling around YOU. When was the last time you showered?"
"I don't remember, but I did flush out the poop tube today."
"Oh my God, it's you! Flies know stink when they smell it. Go take a damn shower!"

"I like this battery-operated wrinkle diminisher you bought. If I use it every day, I should see results over time. "
"Uhhhh....with your amount of wrinkles, it's going to run out of batteries long before you see any results."

"Look at all these birds! So many different types---but I don't know what the difference is between a finch and a sparrow."
"The spelling...."

"Your phone doesn't get good internet when we're in the woods, and my phone doesn't take good pictures. Our cells need to link up and make a baby so we can get the perfect phone that takes good pictures AND has good internet."
"That's not going to happen because my phone has a low sex drive and yours has ED."

"I really want to get that tattoo we discussed---Be Humble, Be Grateful."

"As much eating as we've been doing lately on these camping trips, you need to change that saying to Be Humble, Be Fatful."

"Fast food chicken nuggets are so gross. You never know exactly what's in them. There could be human parts in there, for all we know!"
"Remind me the next time I pull up to the takeout window at McDonalds to ask for their 6-piece cadaver nuggets."

"You know how I know I'm getting older?"
"Ummmm....do you have 30 minutes?"
"No---but when I was younger, I carried condoms in my wallet. Now I carry bandaids instead."

"Why won't you ride the mechanical bull?"
"Because you know what happened the last time I tried. I fell off and wrenched my shoulder."
"But it was so funny! Come on, try again!"
"No way. With my luck, I'll fall this time and permanently injure my back."
"Your point?"
"My point is that I'm not going to hurt myself just for your amusement."
"But you promised you'd make me laugh at least once every single day we were married."
"Remind me---what's the name of that divorce lawyer you said you're friends with on Facebook?"

I don't see any mechanical bulls or campground showers in my husband's future, but I'm working on getting him that FATFUL tattoo for his arm....

Fly on The Wall Where The Lions Roar

Welcome to another edition of Fly On The Wall group blog postings hosted by Karen of Baking In A Tornado. Today there are three of us inviting you into our homes to see what a nosy fly might see if he was buzzing around.

Our fly---or rather flies---followed us on an RV trip 2 weeks ago because we camped at a zoo (and you know how much flies love zoos)! This was Lucy's virgin trip, so we stayed close by, camping just 1 hour away at the famous Lion Country Safari park. WHAT FUN!!! We met our RV neighbors who helped us work out a few newbie issues with Lucy when we first arrived, but after that, it was all about relaxing outdoors and grilling burgers while we sipped some champagne. We took Yoda with us and he was the perfect doggo! But this story would not be complete without a little back history and a promise Mac and I made 40 years ago.

After saying our wedding vows in 1984, we agreed that when we reached retirement age, we would buy an RV and travel around the country. We also joked about how we would both wear muumuus when we did it. We actually bought the
muumuus many, many years ago and kept them in the closet. So on our virgin trip 2 weeks ago with Lucy, we pulled out the muumuus to celebrate this promise. The best part? We've decided to make the muumuus a tradition and wear them at every campsite we visit!

Even crazier is that this RV park is right next to the zoo, so while we were sipping coffee outdoors the following morning, we heard the hungry lions roaring for breakfast! It was incredible, but I was very grateful for the fencing between us. We also heard a ton of monkeys jabbering in the trees.

Since we weren't too far from home, several of our kids and grandkids drove the extra miles to have a cookout on our second day at the park. The weather was perfect, the food was delicious, and the cornhole was competitive!

We are embracing the RV life 100% now and couldn't be happier living in our little Lucy. I already have 7 more trips planned---our next one May 23 up to the GORGEOUS Blue Springs State Park!

Before I forget, let's hear it for all the mamas out there who celebrated Mother's Day last weekend! You deserved your special day! We had a lot of fun, too---visited our favorite South Florida spot, Morikami Japanese Gardens, and enjoyed lunch at their outdoor cafe. We got to hang out with our neighbors by their pool afterward. And then on Mother's Day, it was all about brunch with the family. I'm sure I gained 10 pounds from the weekend but calories don't count for Moms on their special day!

Wish us luck next weekend with Lucy--it will be hot as Hades at the RV park but the springs will be cool and hopefully, the flies will stay away!!

***Want more Meno Mama? My latest fun piece for BUSINESS INSIDER on retirement is HERE to read.  I also have a few over at AARP's "The Girlfriend" on the most affectionate cat breeds (HERE) and great Memorial Day dishes HERE. You can find me over at AARP's "The Ethel" sharing classic recipes from our Moms HERE . If you've been following my column at Yahoo Life, then hopefully you caught these popular posts---one on seniors who choose to live alone (HERE ) and the much debated Mother-In-Law issue (HERE). Enjoy!

Now it's time to go buzz around with the fly at Karen and Diane's house to see what they've been up to!
